Hazel was a kind, old woman who occasionally dabbled in magical arts. Her dabbling soon became more of a hobby and the hobby quickly developed into more of a past time. Eventually, she attended school to learn all she could about spells and potions. She was a natural and quickly mastered riding a broomstick and all the sacred incantations. She could also brew up a rather potent cup of tea. Upon graduation, she was known as Witch Hazel. Yes, it’s a rather quirky name but you still have to love her, warts and all! Ghoulish Factoid: Growing up, my mom had a friend named Hazel. Hazel was an older woman with the heart of an angel and the face of a gargoyle. She had no children of her own so she was sort of like our adopted grandmother. Kids being kids, we thought that she was really a witch for no other reason other than her physical appearance. Recently, my mom revealed that that Hazel owned a thrift store and essentially kept us kids clothed at a time when my dad was having difficulty meeting the needs of his family of seven on an annual income of $40,000. Just goes to show that sometimes things are not as they appear to be – and - you really need to know all the facts about someone before form an opinion. |
